How to Overcome Confinement Fatigue

There is a certain amount of exhaustion that comes with motherhood naturally. Newborns tend to wake up every two to three hours for food or diaper changes. They don't know the difference between two in the morning and two in the afternoon and they are completely self-absorbed with no knowledge of their mother's needs. This ensures that every new mother knows what tired feels like, but some mothers feel exhaustion beyond what is normal or acceptable. They suffer from something known as postpartum or confinement fatigue.

Fatigue is the sensation of feeling worn out and exhausted. Confinement fatigue is different from the normal amount of tiredness that all new mothers feel in that it is more severe. If you suffer from postpartum or confinement fatigue you are so exhausted that you cannot pull yourself out of the bed when needed. You do not experience periods of wakefulness, even after getting six or seven hours of uninterrupted sleep. You have zero energy all the time and nothing seems to wake you up.

If you are expecting a baby, you have to be aware of this condition so you can seek help immediately if it happens to you. Following are some tips on how to handle this extreme level of fatigue during the confinement period.

Hire a Nanny

The best thing you can do to avoid extreme fatigue during confinement is hire a nanny before you deliver the baby. Mothers that have no help and have to do everything for themselves around the clock will naturally experience more exhaustion than mothers that have help on hand at least part of the day.

A confinement nanny will also notice the signs of extreme fatigue and can recommend that the new mother get help. If you think there may be something wrong, you will always have someone to ask if there is a nanny in the home. You are more likely to get the help you need to overcome the fatigue when there is help close at hand.

Check Your Diet

Postpartum or confinement fatigue can set in if you aren't getting adequate nourishment. Your body needs a continuous supply of vitamins and minerals to recover from the strain of childbirth. You also need food to create energy to get through long, demanding days of childcare. If you aren't eating frequent enough or your meals are not nutrient dense, you leave yourself vulnerable to higher levels of fatigue.

Remain Active

As soon as you are cleared by a doctor to get out of bed and move around, make it a point to get on your feet at least a little each day. You should gradually increase your activity level until you are staying on your feet most of the day. This doesn't mean you are training for a marathon or exercising to get your body back. It just means you are getting out of bed, showering, dressing, and remaining as active as possible.

When you don't move your body, your metabolism can drop which leads to a reduction in energy. This leaves you vulnerable to extreme fatigue.

Check for Depression

Postpartum or confinement depression can cause a heightened sense of fatigue. It can be difficult for new mothers to diagnose themselves with depression, so this is another reason to hire a confinement nanny. A good nanny will pick up on the signs of depression and get help for a new mother.
