It is a big mistake not to interview the teachers and administrative staff of the day care center to which you are entrusting your child. You need to know if the center's standards match your own and to know at least a little bit about the teachers and staff of the center. You can do this by spending the time to carefully interview the staff members who will be responsible for your child.

Tip 3: Enroll your child in an institution that has a consistent reputation for outstanding success with children.

You may be new to a city and not know your way around, but find that your new city is teeming with day care centers. If you check out each facility carefully, you may find that only one or two of them has a reputation of being consistently outstanding. A very high percentage of them will be mediocre at best.

Tip 4: Take the night off the night before and the night after your child's first day to just spend a little time.

Unless you've had friends or family watching them for you up to now, your child's first day of daycare is probably going to coincide perfectly with your first day of work. You're both going to be tired. You're both going to be stressed. You're both going to need to spend a little one-on-one time with each other. Don't be afraid to forget the laundry, order a pizza, and just enjoy. You deserve it.

If a child is ill or recovering from illness, don't expect the same moods and behavior as when he or she is well. Don't allow downright nasty behavior or words, but make sure you're giving a sick child plenty of TLC.

As children grow older, their skills at subterfuge and blame-shifting grow, but pre-schoolers are usually transparent enough for you to decipher who was the guilty party. If a child repeatedly gets disciplined for things she didn't do, she'll have a right to feel persecuted and may start to lie.

When a child cries and is very repentant for breaking something or breaking a rule by accident, he may be punished enough simply by how badly he feels. If you discipline harshly when a child is already upset and sorry for the offense, it may give a wrong message. Also don't discipline a child twice for the same offence. Unless the offense is grievous, there's no reason for both you and the partner/caregiver to punish him.
