Preparing for a baby is so exciting! But while you wait for that moment when labor begins, there are so many details to get your home ready. Some essential home safety tips are obvious, some are usually overlooked.

Home Safety Tips for a Healthy Baby

Sleeping Safety: Make sure the bed is safe. The mattress needs to be firm and fit the crib tightly. Although we love all the cute cuddly toys, pillows, bumper pads, comforters and the like they aren't safe for a new baby. The baby can get trapped in the folds and be unable to breathe.

Diapering Safety: You'll be amazed by how fast a tiny baby can roll away. It can take just a second as you reach for something. If you use a changing table make sure it has straps, and use them.

Bath Time Safety: Serious accidents happen in bathtubs. A special baby bathtub that offers baby support and a no-slip bottom is the best plan. If you plan to bathe your baby in your own tub, use a rubber mat. When she is big enough to sit up, you can use a baby bath chair. Be sure to set your water heater no higher than 120 degrees F and look for special tub spouts that prevent hot water burns. Also, keep everything you need in easy reach.

Fire Safety: Smoke detectors are a must. Keep them in working order and check them monthly. Also, have a fire extinguisher on hand. Make a plan for rescue and escape, if a fire does break out.

Carbon Monoxide Safety: If you use gas or oil heat or have an attached garage, be sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in your home. Check the batteries twice a year.

Paint Safety for Baby's Room: If you're in an older home attend to paint that's flaking or peeling in your baby's room. Have a professional remove or seal it. There may be dangerous lead in the paint. If you wish to freshly paint your baby's room be aware of the chemicals that fresh paint can release into the air. Have someone (other than the expectant mom) paint your baby's room at least a few weeks prior to your baby's arrival and make sure to thoroughly ventilate the room, so the air quality is safe.

New Carpeting: New carpets are great, but they can out-gas for at least a month. As with fresh paint, if you plan to lay new carpet in your baby's room, do it in time for the out-gassing phase to be over by the time baby comes home. Also, be sure to use non-slip pads under any area rugs you use in the room.

EMF Exposure Safety

Avoiding exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is unavoidable. EMFs are generated from your home electrical grid and all wireless devices, like cell phones, cordless phones, Wi-Fi and baby monitors. Babies and little children are especially sensitive and since EMFs are linked to many childhood health problems, you need to use EMF protection in your home safety plan as you're preparing for your baby. There are a number of products on the market for this. Look for a company that has a good history, guarantee and well-informed customer service.

Preparing for a baby can be a lot of fun. Follow these few home safety tips and then relax and anticipate the joyful arrival of your new baby.

How To Be A Competitive Parent in a Healthy Baby Competition

In this era of modernization everything has seemed to change, develop and evolve. Be it for the better or not, we just couldn't stop this constant change in our world. In our day to day human existence, we tend to learn new things and eventually adopt well. There is also the so- called survival of the fittest and even mutation. But before we get too deep, scientific and technical, perhaps it is good to look at our human and humane aspect very well at the affective level.

Biologically and sociologically speaking even psychologically, a person has a cyclic life and every species has its sole role and responsibility. Each plays a unique role in a system, chain. From the very moment his life begun in the womb, his parents and most parents do that to their child, from that moment, they already have an idea of what he might become in the future. Parents tend to imagine and day-dream something wonderful for their child and despite that, there remain a feeling of excitement, happiness and even fear.

Has everything really changed, at all? Before a baby is born, most often than not, he is expected to go to school, have a career after and later on have his own family. And the process is the same with his child to be. Perhaps, it is only the in-between that varies, of how one lives his life, as how a certain parent will rear a child. And how it will affect or influence that child's parenting style when the time comes.

In line with this, has parenting really changed, developed and evolved? Today's parenting is greatly influenced by modernity and technology. There are those old practices that are still applicable now and those that are not anymore and have become obsolete. Parents cope with the prevailing style and trend. Modern babies are more involved to the society's activities and a lot of companies opened and catered to address their needs and discover baby's potentials. To name a few, there is now the industry of baby modeling, baby photography, baby photo contests and a lot more!

Parents are also more inclined of letting their bundle of joy enter and participate into this new face of baby stardom. It is subjective though because there are still those who are hesitant and remained "conservative". They all have their valid reason and it is worth respecting. We all agree that there is still no perfect parenting technique since everything is learned through experience. What is effective for one child may not be at all for the other child. We simply have come to an acceptance the every child is unique and each and every child is worth all the love in the world. Parenthood is indeed a great responsibility.

For those who consider joining a baby photo contest, baby modeling and etc., there are a variety of venues to do so. They are those parents who can't help but garner all the praises in the world for having a cute and adorable child. But the fact remains that every parent sees their child as the cutest and most lovable, who wouldn't anyway?

So, as a parent and if you think your child has what it takes to be in that baby photo contest and any other baby field, it is not yet too late to make up your mind and widen your baby's horizon.

When money is tight, you can always create your own baby food. Many baby foods found in stores are safe and convenient, however many contain a lot of sugar, water and starch. Homemade of ones have lower amounts and are more natural.

Babies do not need to consume solid foods until they are at 4-6 months old. Babies younger than 4-6 months old have not learned how to swallow. If they are given solid foods at any age before 4-6 months, they'll most likely push out the solid food due to the sucking reflex of the mouth. There is also the option of forcing the food down, however if you aren't careful, it might cause the baby to choke or gag. Once your baby is anywhere between 4 or 6 months old, it'll be much easier to feed them solids; However make sure that the food has small lumps and is lightly textured.

The first foods for a baby to be soft. Many health nutritionists suggest that infant rice cereal filled with iron, mixed with a baby formula or breast milk should be the baby's first solid food food. This is because rice has a much lower chance than the other grain products to cause any allergic reactions. You can use a food processer, grinder, food mill or a basic blender to make the food spherical so it'll be easier for the baby to consume. If all of this sounds too time consuming to you, you can always use a fork. If you are having a family meal and want to feed your baby, take out a portion of the food for the baby before you add any taste to it (spice, seasoning, salt, and so forth) in case of allergies are present. After a month or so of solid foods, you can begin feeding your baby small pieces of meat, fruits or vegetables.

What age should babies begin to eat solid foods?

When the baby is anywhere between 4 or 6 months old, you can feed them cereal and rice mixed with formula or breast milk. When the baby is 7 months old, you can begin feeding them small pieces of vegetables. At 8 months, small pieces of fruit are acceptable. At 10 months, you can begin feeding the baby small pieces of egg yolks and meats. When your baby is 10 months old or older, you can begin feeding them dairy products such as yogurt or cheese.

Food safety

Make you sure you prepare the food very carefully. Babies are much more vulnerable to sicknesses than toddlers or older children. Be sure to wash your hands before you make baby food and make sure that any raw foods are cooked very carefully. Make sure that the baby food isn't left alone at room temperature for two hours or more once it's prepared, otherwise bacteria will grow quickly. If your baby does not eat, refrigerate the food.

Steps to making a safe, tasty and healthy food
Before doing anything, wash your hands thoroughly and make sure that the equipment you use is clean.
Rinse any fruits you have before you use them and scrub the vegetables you have. Remove all pits or seeds from the fruit. For meats, remove the skin, fat, gristle, and bones. Make sure that the food is fresh and not left overs.
When cooking the food, make sure to cook the food in water. Later, if the recipe you use asks for liquid, you can use the water you cooked. The foods can also be baked or steamed.
Make sure not to add any seasonings, sugar, salt, honey, or any sweetener. The sweet taste in foods doesn't do anything for the baby. Chances are, your baby will like the food the way it is. Babies under 12 months old can be ill from consuming corn syrup or honey because they might contain botulism spores. These cannot be destroyed by the digestive system of a young baby.
Mash the food until it is semi solid or soft enough for the baby to consume owner_ without choking or hurting their gums.
