Type of Transmission

This is one of the most important thing to think about. Video baby monitors these days have either an analog or digital transmission that run on different frequencies. Analog monitors are cheaper to buy but are more open to interference. Digital monitors offer a more secure and interference free reception, but tend to be pricier. However, digital frequencies can be open to interference so many of the newer models now utilize digital frequency hop and data encryption technology. Signal Range

Some monitors offer a signal range of 350 feet up to 650 feet with a clear line of vision, although in reality the range tends to be shorter because of concrete walls, furniture etc in the way. If the monitor is for someone who lives in a large house with a big back or front yard, then you will want to go for a model with a longer signal range as opposed to someone who lives in small apartment.

Portability

There are baby video monitors that can't easily be moved around. However, most parents tend to be on their feet most of the day and would probably appreciate a model that is portable. This means that the parent unit can be easily handheld, has a kick out stand so they can place it on a table top or even has a belt clip so they can attach it to a belt, waistband or pocket.

What sort of features are parents looking for in their video baby monitors. Obviously they want to be able to see their baby clearly both day and night. Most monitors come with a LCD color screen, and automatic black and white night vision. The screen sizes vary, however. They range from a small screen, around 1.5〃 up to a large 7〃 which is great if not a bit excessive. Parents seem satisfied with a 3.5〃 screen and this is perfectly adequate, although I would say anything between 2.4〃 and 3.5〃 is good. There are video monitors that have a basic black and white day and night screen which some parents find perfectly adequate and is cheaper too. However, I do think that having a color screen is much nicer for day time viewing.

Depending on the model, other features that you'll find include talk-to-baby intercom, voice activation alert, temperature sensor, lullabies, camera pan, scan and zoom and nightlight. The more features a model has the pricier it can become.Apart from night vision, I think the most important features are: talk-to-baby intercom which means you can soothe your baby without having to go into the room; audio only mode so you can turn the video off (conserves energy) and you are alerted when your baby starts to whimper or cry. This is a great for parents at night as they can then see whether they need to get up; and expandability. It's always useful to choose a model that has the option of adding additional cameras. This allows the parent to have a camera in different rooms, great for an expanding family.

Buying a video baby monitor as a gift is not so simple as you can see as there are so many factors to take into account. So which one do you choose? In the end it really all depends on your budget, but it's worth buying the best one you can afford that will offer an interference free and secure reception and clear video and audio.

Philips AVENT is a name that most parents associate with quality parent and baby products including breastfeeding and bottle feeding items and now also baby monitors. Their first video monitor is the Philips AVENT Video Baby Monitor, a 100% digital monitor that ensures a virtually interference free and secure signal up to a range of 490 feet. In fact, it has 18 channels which is automatically scans to find the the most secure.

Let's take a look at what this monitor has to offer. First of all it has a high resolution 2.4" color screen on which to view your baby during the day and as the light gets dim, the automatic infrared LED's give you black and white night vision.

The monitor operates on a frequency band of 2.4GHz and automatically scans its 18 channels to find the most secure and interference free. Many customers like this video monitor because it offers an interference free signal with great picture and audio quality. However, there are some mixed reviews about the inconsistent quality, not particularly with the day and night vision, but more to do with interference with their WiFi networks.

Access to the features is very easy, at a press of a button you can activate the lullabies, movement of the camera, brightness and volume control. When the parent unit is out of range it will beeps once and the message "out of range" appears on video display. The Link light on the parent unit also flashes red. An interesting customer comment was that the monitor was too big to fit into a pocket and too awkward to hang from a belt loop. The camera can't be wall mounted but it's tripod compatible so you can get a better viewing angle.

However, a few customers complained that their video image froze on occasion which was very annoying and also worrying.

Another problem was the signal range. Levana state that the maximum range is 450ft with line of vision and optimum if 150 feet. Most people don't have a clear line of vision from the monitor to camera as walls get in the way which can affect the signal. Some people complained that they barely got to about 50 feet when they lost signal. Unfortunately this does seem to be a problem with many baby monitors.

There are definitely a few things to consider when it comes to choosing the best video baby monitor for you. You need to think about what type of monitor is best for your home, what your budget is and then what features you consider are must haves. This article is first and foremost about how to choose the right type of video monitor and the considerations you need to think about before you do.

A video baby monitor is basically a radio transmitter which runs on a wireless system using radio frequencies. In North America the most common frequencies are around 49 MHz, 900 MHZ and 2.4GHz. There are two types of transmissions used - analog and digital.

Analog transmission has been around for a very long time. The signal works like a continuous wave that fluctuates infinitely within its frequency range which takes up bandwidth. This worked well for many decades, but with all the wireless devices around now, the analog signal has become harder to transmit and susceptible to interference. The newer kid on the block is digital technology which is easier to transmit and more reliable. The signal is conveyed usually through a binary code which sends it as series of on/off electrical impulses and then put back together in the correct order. Even though digital transmission is more reliable, it's still open to interference as many other wireless devices you many have in your home use the same frequency.

If you're after an interference free and secure digital signal, then look out for baby video monitors that have frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology, also known as frequency hopping. It works by transmitting radio signals rapidly between many frequency channels which makes it much more secure. Video baby monitors with frequency hopping do tend to more expensive.

Analog vs Digital? Which technology is right for you.

Analog monitors are more affordable, but are more prone to interference. Analog is worth considering if you live in a suburban or rural area where you are not on top of your neighbors and have few electronic devices that share the same frequency as your monitor. The good news is that most video baby monitors, both analog and digital, come with multiple channels so you can switch to the channel with less interference.

The new and improved Summer Infant Best View Handheld Monitor is an update of the previously popular analog model. Not only does it looks sleeker and smarter, but offers up-to-date digital technology providing a more secure and interference free transmission.

The Summer Infant Best view has some really great features that parents really appreciate. First and mostly importantly it has a 2.5" LCD color screen on which to view your baby in color during the day and then as it gets dark it automatically gives you black and white nighttime vision.

Having good night vision is important for most parents as they can keep an eye on their little one during the night. Quite a few customers mentioned that they felt the nighttime vision wasn't as clear and crisp as the previous model, saying that the image was grainy and fuzzy. However, other customers were very pleased with the quality.

Unfortunately digital transmissions can suffer from interference especially if close to other wireless devices that run on the same frequency such as cordless phones, WiFi computers, microwave ovens etc. Often, moving them away from these devices will improve the reception.

Given that the screen is only 2.5", some customers commented that if you are expecting HD quality on such a small screen then you will be disappointed.

As mentioned, many customers were very pleased with the night vision as they were with the pan, tilt and zoom camera capabilities that are remotely activated by the monitor. This allows you to get the best view of your baby at all times. Hence the name of this video baby monitor.

The Summer Infant Best view is designed to be handheld and fits nicely into your hand so you can carry it around. It's also the just the right size to fit into your pocket. There's also a built-in kick stand so you can place it on a level surface when you are perhaps working in the kitchen or watching TV and has a belt clip so you can attach it to your belt or waistband, allowing you to be hands-free if out in the garden.

Along with features such as automatic nighttime vision, LED sound lights, quick view, volume control and rechargeable batteries, the monitor can expand with your family, supporting up to four cameras. However, it doesn't have two-way talk back that features on many other video baby monitors, but you can clearly see and hear your baby which is the most important thing.

Most customers were more than satisfied with the quality of the picture and audio. There were, however, some complaints that the nighttime vision wasn't as clear as the previous analog model. Overall, though, the Summer Infant Best View Handheld Color Video Monitor was felt to be a great baby monitor and good value for money.

When it comes to the safety of our children and home, nothing is too much trouble. But have you thought about whether using a video baby monitors is safe? In this article, I will discuss whether these monitors can cause harm to your children and whether they can be misused by others.

You may be aware that during 2010/11 there were reports of two deaths of infants from strangulation by the electrical cords of Summer Infant video baby monitors. In both cases this was caused by the camera being placed too close to the baby's crib, one on top of the crib rail and the other on a changing table next to the crib. To avoid further tragic incidences, Summer Infant announced a voluntary recall so they could provide new product labeling and instructions. Now instructions clearly state that the camera should be placed at least three feet from the baby's crib.

You really don't have to place the camera right on top of your baby in order to see them clearly. Even with night vision you can see them from at least six feet away. Also many camera's have a zoom function so you can see them at close range.

The other aspect to video baby monitor safety is lack of security. ABC News (2010) brought to the attention of parents the fact that their babies could be seen through a baby video monitor whilst driving around the neighborhood. All the parents were absolutely shocked that other people could see their baby in their cribs and felt very concerned that they had no warning that this could happen.

The news report questioned whether this could invite burglars as well as other unwanted attention. Whilst some people thought this was really good to know, others felt that this was an irresponsible piece of news reporting, bringing this to the attention of people that could misuse baby video monitors. Whatever you feel about this, the question of your child's safety is or should be a huge concern for all parents thinking of buying one.

You may be asking how it's possible for other people to see your baby in it's crib? The first thing to know is how these monitors work. A baby monitor is essentially a radio transmitter on a fixed frequency of around 49MHz, 900MHz or 2.4GHz that sends a signal from the monitor to the receiver. A signal is received either through an analog or digital transmission. Analog has been around for a long time, but given the rise in wireless devices around it's become harder to transmit and much more open to interference. Digital wireless on the other hand is much more reliable and less open to interference.

The problem is that many wireless electronic devices such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, radios, remote controlled devices, security video cameras, smart meters for electric energy and, of course, baby monitors all run on similar frequencies. So if you have neighbors who also have baby monitors running on the same frequency, then you will be open to interference. Usually video baby monitors come with more than one channel, so if you get interference then you can switch to another channel without interference, but this doesn't guarantee security.

Unlike WiFi computers which you can password protect, most video baby monitors don't have any security features. This means that the signal can easily be picked up by the receiver of anyone's video monitor in your area. Obviously people can only see the signal whilst the transmitter is on. The problem is that many people with video monitors leave them on for 24 hours which could enable a burglar to determine whether someone is at home or not.

To ensure complete security then you should look for a model that offers frequency hopping and if possible, data encryption technology as it's highly resistant to interference. A model that offers both is the Motorola MBP36 digital video baby monitor. Unfortunately having this sort of technology comes at a higher price, but if you want peace of mind then it's worth considering.

So are video baby monitors safe? Video baby monitors are very safe as long as you read the instructions and place the camera at least three feet away from your baby's crib. Transmission signals are open to interception so you need to make sure that you choose the right one for your circumstances.

When choosing a baby monitor there are two different types that you will come across: the good old-fashioned audio monitor that parents have been using for many years, but has now been updated, and the much newer video monitors, designed so you can see as well as hear your baby.

What baby monitor you choose really all depends on you as a parent. Stop and think about whether you're the type of parent who is happy to just hear your baby or you would you have more peace of mind being able to both see and hear at the same time.

Audio Baby Monitors

For many years parents used the old wired analog audio baby monitors to hear their babies, but now with new technology, they have become wireless and offer even more useful features. Not only can you hear your baby, but can even talk to them through the two-way talk back feature available with specific models.

Audio baby monitors are prone to interference especially if you have other devices which run on the same frequency. However, on many models the monitor actually automatically scans the multitude of channels to ensure that you have interference free audio. Other features may include voice activation mode, sensitivity adjustment, nightlight, sound indicator lights and even lullabies.

The newest digital technology found in audio monitors, is Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT). DECT offers an interference free, encrypted transmission that's not affected by other DECT systems, WiFi networks, blue tooth and other wireless devices.

However, there is some controversy surrounding DECT baby monitors. A few years back, UK based Consumer group Powerwatch urged parents to get rid of their DECT monitors because they found that babies were experiencing disruptive sleep, restlessness and irritability. These symptoms stopped when the monitor was taken away. This didn't seem to happen with the old wired models or other analog or digital wireless monitors.

Video Baby Monitors

Times have certainly changed and now you can not only hear your baby, but can see what your little one is up to any time you want. For some parents this is a great feature as it gives them peace of mind, but others think it's a waste of time and money.

Video baby monitors come with a parent unit which is usually portable so you can carry it around with you from room to room. Some you can even attach to your belt or waistband to be hands-free, allowing you to do things like gardening or washing the car.

Video screens come in different sizes, from a small 1.8" screen to a huge 7" screen, although I think around 3.5" is perfectly adequate. You place the camera in your baby's room on level surface like chest of drawers or shelf, so it doesn't drop, at least three or more feet away from the crib for safety reason. Another option is to wall mount the camera with screws and bracket that is usually included. Remotely controlled, cameras can pan around the room, zoom in, tilt and even scan between rooms if you've got multiple cameras depending on the model.

Again, depending on the model, you can have additional features such as night lights, temperature sensors, voice activated alerts, sound light alert, lullabies and even be able to take snap shots. Perhaps the best feature of them all is the automatic night vision capability. As the light in your baby's room gets low, the built-in LED lights on the camera allows you to have clear black and white vision.

Like audio baby monitors, video monitors are also open to interference. Not only that, there have been reports that parents can see other neighbors babies through their monitors, especially if they have one that is on a similar frequency. If you're thinking of buying a video baby monitor then it would be useful to check out your neighbors to see if the have one and if so, on what frequency it transmits so you can avoid it. The good news is that frequency hopping and data encryption technology offers an interference free and secure signal. As you can imagine this technology comes at a price, but this may be worth considering for peace of mind.

What baby monitor is best: audio vs video?

On the positive side, audio baby monitors are generally cheaper and sufficient for your needs especially if you are in a small to medium sized house. Also some models offer the very useful two-way talk back feature so you can talk or soothe you baby without going into their room.

However, on the down side, there are concerns regarding the safety of the newer DECT monitors. Also, even though you can easily pick up your baby's sounds, and talk to them through the two-way talk back feature, you can't see what they're up to without going into the room and possibly disturbing them.

Video baby monitors tend to be more costly, but not only can you hear your baby, but see them too. They are great for people with any size home, but especially if you have a home with more than one floor then you don't have to be running up and down to check on your baby.

Screens come in a variety of sizes, the larger the screen, the more clearer you can see. Most monitors offer features such as automatic night vision and two-way talk back so you can both see and talk to your baby without having to go in the room.

There is the issue of your signal being intercepted by neighbors with monitors on the same frequency. If you really want security then you may want to consider a model with frequency hopping and encryption technology.

Both audio baby monitors and video baby monitors both have their positive and negative points. In the end it comes down to whether you are happy to be able to hear your baby only, or whether you will feel much more at ease if you can both hear and see them.

What makes this video baby monitor different is the snap shot capability and viewing options. You can remotely capture images of your little one at a touch of a button that can be stored on the included memory card or transferred to your computer to share amongst friends and family. This is a great feature because you can capture pictures that you wouldn't ordinary capture if you were in the same room. You can store up to 4,000 pictures.

There are three viewing options. At a touch of a button you can see in full screen mode, in scan mode which automatically switches from one camera to the next and in quad split screen mode, allowing you to see up to 4 rooms at the same time.

This is all well and good, but what about the picture and audio quality? The Lorex LW2003 offers 100% digital technology, ensuring an interference free and secure signal. This is because the signal hops between frequencies, virtually eliminating any interference from devices such as cordless phones, game controllers, microwave ovens and other WiFi devices. This means that the pictures during the day are vibrant and clear, and the automatic black and white night vision is excellent.

Night vision is an important feature when choosing a video baby monitor, and the Lorex LW2003 allows you to see your little baby at night up to a distance of 22 feet from camera to crib.

Other features that the Lorex LW2003 has is two-way talk back so you can communicate with your baby. This is a great feature for parents who can soothe or talk to their child without having to go into the room. You could be out in the garden and not able to get to your child quickly, so being about to talk with them at a distance is a good alternative.

Another cool feature is the sound-activated alerts. You can sleep easy at night knowing that monitor screen and audio will turn on the instant it detects any noise, from a small whimper to a loud cry. However, reviewing customer complaints, it does seem that there is a problem with the sound-activated alert function not working properly.

Setting up the Lorex LW2003 is incredibly easy to set up, all you need to do once you've taken it out of the box is plug and play. You can take it from room to room and even outdoors if you fancy a spot of gardening up to a range of 450ft. It's so portable that you can even pack up the monitor and camera and take it when visiting family or friends, or even going on holiday.

Most video baby monitor parent units come with a color LCD screen. Screen size varies from around a quite small 1.8" screen to a large 7" screen. It really all depends on how clearly you want to see your baby, but I think a 3.5" screen is perfectly adequate.

The Parent unit comes with easy to use buttons to allow you access to the features menu. If you really want the newest technology you can take a look at the Summer Infant Baby Touch video monitor which is the first monitor that has touch screen technology. Of course, being hi-tec means that it's a top of the range price.

Portability
Most video baby monitors are extremely portable and are designed to be handheld. Many come with a built-in kick out stand so you can place it on a flat surface or with a belt clip so you can attach it to your belt or waistband to be hands free. Some even look like cellphones that you can carry around in your hand or pocket or place in the charging station.

Night Vision
A great feature that most video baby monitors have is automatic black and white night vision capability. From low light to complete darkness, the in-built infrared LED lights on the camera allow you to see your baby up to a certain range. Some monitors allow you to see up to 10ft, but others more than 20ft from camera to crib.

Two-Way Talk Back
Having two-way communication is a really neat feature that parents really love. The two-way audio between the parent unit and camera in your child's room allows you to talk to your little one without you even being there and you can hear them gurgle back to you.

Expandability
When you buy a video baby monitors most come with one camera, but with some models you can buy two, offering a saving. Many models can support up to four cameras, allowing multiple use throughout your house. Picking a monitor that allows expandability is helpful if you think you will need to cover more areas of your house, e.g. if you have or are planning more than one child or have or are having twins.

Motion and Sound Sensors
Another cool feature is motion or sound alert sensors. Most cameras have very sensitive built-in microphones so when your baby starts making noises you will be immediately alerted. This is great at night when your video monitor is turned off and only turns on if voice activated.

Sound Lights
This feature is commonly found in video baby monitors. When your baby makes a sound the parent unit sound lights will turn on. The louder the baby's sound is the brighter or more lights will come on, depending on the model. This is particularly useful if you are in a noisy room and can't hear the audio.

Temperature sensor
Some models offer a temperature sensor that can monitor the temperature in your baby's room. Ideally, the temperature should be between 68 to 72 degrees F. Again this is a useful feature, but be aware that some customers have complained the temperature is not accurate on some models.

Volume control
Most models come with the ability to control the volume. With some models you have to scroll through the menu to access the volume control which can be a bit of a chore, whilst others have volume control on the side of the monitor which is easier.

Lullabies
Some video baby monitors come with preloaded lullabies. Some parents really love this feature whilst others reported that the sound quality was tinny and annoying. I would probably not recommended buying a model specifically for the lullabies as you may be disappointed, but if it happens to have this feature then well and good.

In the end, the most important consideration is to buy a model that offers good picture and audio quality, is interference free and secure. Of course it's always nice to have an all singing and dancing model, but the more features you have, the more expensive the unit. I hope this has been a helpful guide.

If you're looking for a video baby monitor that's full of high-tech features and looks smart and stylish, then the Summer Infant Baby Touch Color Video Monitor is ideal. Not only does it look like a smart phone, but uses the same digital technology. In fact, this is the first video baby monitor to have a touch screen that controls the functions.

With its generous 3.5" LCD color screen, this Baby Touch Video Monitor is packed full of amazing features that most parents will find indispensable. First of all it has night vision so you can keep an eye on your baby at any time during the night. As the light starts to get low, the monitor will automatically use its infrared LED's to transmit a clear image of your baby.

Then there's the two-way talk back feature which means that you can talk to your baby through the monitor and they will hear your voice through the camera. You can have a two-way conversation without even having to go into your baby's room.

Another great feature is the ability to, at a touch, remotely control the pan, scan and zoom functions. You can pan and scan to the left and right, up and down as well as zoom in and out, offering you a variety of viewing options.

Consumers rave about how easy it is to set up and use and are more than satisfied with the quality of the picture and sound. However, a few reviewers did state that they were a little disappointed with the quality of the video given the cost of the monitor. In some cases this may not be the fault of the monitor, but with the reception.

Even though signal range is up to 400 feet, this is with a clear line of sight. If there are walls, large furniture, or trees if you are in the garden, this may interfere with the signal. Digital signals are not totally immune from interference and if your monitor is too close to the camera or other wireless devices such as cordless phones, WiFi networks then this can create a problem.

The Summer Infant Baby Touch Color Video monitor is extremely portable. There's a built in foot rest for table top convenience and a belt clip so you can attach it to your belt or waistband to be totally hands-free. This makes this model a very versatile option.

Talking about versatility, you also have the ability to add up to three additional cameras (four in all) for use in multiple rooms, a must for growing families.

This model isn't all singing and dancing as it doesn't have features such as lullabies, nightlight or temperature sensor like many other less expensive digital models. However, what Summer Infant has focused on is the versatile viewing options and ease of use. It looks good too!

Because of its innovative digital touch screen technology, the cost of this Summer Infant video baby monitor is higher than other digital video baby monitors on the market. What's very apparent is that the people who bought this model felt it to be good value for money.

Sleek and stylish, the Motorola MBP36 Digital Video Baby Monitor comes with a generous 3.5" LCD color screen that not only offers excellent picture quality, but the camera can take digital photographs to remotely capture those special moments that you might have well missed.

Motorola, are known for their high quality electronic products, and their venture into the baby market has come up with something quite special, confirmed by customers who have given mostly positive comments and a high rating.

What makes the Motorola MBP36 video monitor special is that it has frequency hopping and data encryption technology. Frequency hopping transmissions are highly resistant to interference from other wireless products that you may have in and around your home and offer a high level of security. As the signal is difficult to intercept, you can rest easy that no-one will be able to pick up pictures of your baby or listen in to conversations. This is a real concern or should be for parents when thinking of buying a video baby monitor.

Another thing is that the signal range goes up to a huge 650 feet distance with an out of range alert, so you don't need to worry whether you can see your baby whilst in your garden or out washing the car.

So what else makes the Motorola MBP36 worth buying. For starters it's extremely easy to set up even if you're not tech savvy. Scroll through the menu to be able to operate functions such as pan, zoom and tilt so you have multiple viewing options. Then there's the two-way talk back feature that's great if you want to communicate with your little one without having to go into their room.

Another important feature that's important to most parents is night vision so you can keep an eye on your baby during the night without having to go into their room or even get out of bed. The Motorola MP36 offers automatic black and white night vision through camera's built-in infrared LED's which are activated when the light starts to get low and then dark.

Other great features include being able to play lullabies and see the temperature in the room as well as being able to take digital pictures which is a bonus. Unlike some other models that offer lullabies and temperature monitors, reviewers have commented that the lullabies actually sound good and the temperature monitor is correct.

There is very little in the way of negative comments with the Motorola MBP36 video baby monitor, even the price. The only fly in the ointment is the difficulty in obtaining additional cameras. The monitor can support up to 4 cameras, but at the time of writing this article they do not appear to be available.

Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Video Monitor Review

The Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Video Monitor has a small 1.8" TFT color screen which offers crystal clear picture quality. This model is designed to be handheld, the shape of it fitting nicely into your hand. The unit is both compact and lightweight so you carry it around in your hand, or use the built-in foot rest to place it on a level surface. It also has an adjustable belt clip so you can attach it to your belt or waistband to be totally hands free.

The Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld monitor runs on 900MHz wireless technology which is said to avoid interference from other wireless devices such as cordless phones, microwaves and WiFi which tend to use 2.4Gz. However, some people did experience some static interference as well as being able to pick up neighbor's babies.

Unfortunately, 900MHz transmissions are open to interference, especially if you have devices that run on similar frequencies, or live in a highly populated area where other people may have video baby monitors. This is something to be aware of when looking for a monitor. If you want one that's truly secure then you need to look for a model that offers hop technology which is much more secure.

On the bright side, the monitor has a range of up to 350 feet with a clear line of sight and 100ft if obstructed by walls, large furniture etc. It also has night vision capability.

Night vision is an important consideration when choosing a video baby monitor, and this Summer Infant model has 9 in-built infrared LED's that allow the camera to view clear black and white images as the light gets low to dark within a distance of up to 6ft. This is great for parents to keep a check on their little one at night without having to go into their room or even get out of bed.

Other features include the option to add two additional cameras for multiple use. As your family or needs grow so can the monitor.

This Summer Infant video baby monitor offers good value for money if you're looking for something quite basic. It doesn't have as many features as other models such as two-way communication, but it does offer good picture quality which is important to parents. It's also very easy to use and fully portable, another great asset. The only negative is that people have experienced static interference and issues surrounding security.
