Baby Carriers - Become an Expert at Buying the Right Premium Brand Baby Carrier

There are so many baby carrier brands out there making all kinds of claims. We often accept the features they have without asking the fundamental question; what is important to me? I advise my clients to take a step back, assess their situation and do some research. Choosing the right baby carrier is one of the most important purchasing decisions we can make for our children. This article will help you to confidently identify premium quality carriers and ask retailers the right questions.

Quality

The quality of a carrier can range from the care put into making the carrier to the means of producing it. Here are the main quality considerations:

You may be carrying your child for a significant part of their early childhood so ensure you are satisfied that the fabric is hardwearing.

The carrier may be in contact with you and your child's skin for long periods, so natural breathable materials are a high priority.!00% cotton, canvas and linen are often used in premium carriers where the material is in contact with the skin.

Look for Non-metallic vegetable dyes as these are kinder to the skin.

The OeKo-Tex standards include a test for material worn next to the skin. If the carrier achieved a good or very good in the children's skin category, the result will always be prominently displayed. If it is not, ask your retailer about it.

Is the baby carrier built to last? Premium baby carriers are not cheap and you may be using it for some time.

Are the buckles and clasps sturdy? The best carriers use military grade plastics in this safety critical part of their construction.

Are the seams double stitched with extra anchor stitching at the load bearing points?

Check for your local safety standard marks

If ethical buying is important to you, check out the manufacturer's website, most responsible makers will have environmental and human rights impact statements along with information on the means of production.

Design

The design of the carrier will tell you a lot about the care put into making it. Importantly, it may reveal if the brand has kept up with innovations, or is using an old design. Some baby carriers are more suited to certain body shapes and of course you may want it to fit a number of wearers and children. Here are some ideas on what to look for in the information, adverts and pictures and what to ask your retailer:

Make sure the carrier is suitable for the age of your child; the age range should be displayed prominently in the advert or literature.

Check that the child is seated in the correct position; research has shown that children seated in an 'M' position, with their bottom and legs supported knee-pit to knee-pit, are getting the optimum support for their developing pelvis, hip and back joints.

With most carriers there is a learning curve in terms of their usage. However, putting the carrier on should feel intuitive.

How many positions can you use with carrier? Having the versatility of three positions, such as: front (facing in), back, and hip carry can be a god-send as the child grows and your needs change.

Studies have found that new-born babies being carried in the facing out position can develop anxiety. I advise parents to avoid carriers that only offer the facing out position.

Be wary of buckles and straps that are hard to reach and buckles that are too stiff and fiddly.

Premium carriers have extra wide padded shoulder straps and a wide stiff padded waist belt for comfort and support,

Most premium brands will offer an organic option.

The very best carriers have plenty of adjustability to suit you, your baby, and your carrying partner's needs. Make sure that each supporting strap or belt can be fully adjusted

Premium brand carriers often differentiate themselves with additional features such as hoods, foot straps, storage bags and neck rests. Ask your retailer what else it comes with.

After-sales support

Baby carriers can be difficult to get used to at first. Many manufacturers and retailers of premium brands offer practical advice.

Does the carrier come with a fully illustrated booklet or DVD with carrying instructions?

Are there on-line videos showing how to use the carrier?

Is there a help line or email address you can use to gain additional information, advice and guidance?

Try Before You Buy

Even with a comprehensive checklist like the one above, there is no substitute for trying before you buy. The problem is retailers often only stock a narrow selection of carrier and, anyway, you can only try them on in the shop. There is little opportunity to find out in the real world whether you and your little one will take to it.

Some retailers offer baby carrier hire services for anything from 2 weeks to several months hire. Some will even use the cost of the hire to offset the price of a new carrier. This can be an effective way of ensuring you get the right carrier.

Join your local sling-meet group, although these groups are usually for people with stretchy and woven wraps, they often have sling libraries that include soft structured baby carriers.

Contact your local sling consultant. They host carrier parties for groups and undertake personal one to one consultations. Your sling consultant should have a wide range of carriers and should be able to demonstrate the carriers with you and your child and offer tailored advice.

By thinking about your needs, researching and asking the right questions you should avoid expensive mistakes and ensure you find the right premium baby carrier for you.

Wendy Sheard is a Trageschule trained sling consultant and owner of Precious-Bundle one of the UK's largest retailers of premium stretchy wraps and soft structured baby carriers. Wendy believes in the personal touch and offers pre-sales sling consultations, after sales advice and ongoing sling support for as long as you want it.

Wendy would be delighted to write original baby carrier related content for you. Please contact her via the details on the Precious-Bundle website for more information.

Buying A Video Baby Monitor As A Gift

If you're thinking about buying a video baby monitor as a gift you may already be feeling little confused and just a little stressed. There are so many baby monitors available these days with so many different features and range in price that it becomes difficult to choose. So before you start pulling your hair out here are a few things you need to consider in order to buy that perfect gift.

Type of Transmission

This is one of the most important thing to think about. Video baby monitors these days have either an analog or digital transmission that run on different frequencies. Analog monitors are cheaper to buy but are more open to interference. Digital monitors offer a more secure and interference free reception, but tend to be pricier. However, digital frequencies can be open to interference so many of the newer models now utilize digital frequency hop and data encryption technology. This not only makes it virtually interference free, but offers optimal security so you don't have to worry about your transmission being intercepted by neighbors.

Signal Range

Some monitors offer a signal range of 350 feet up to 650 feet with a clear line of vision, although in reality the range tends to be shorter because of concrete walls, furniture etc in the way. If the monitor is for someone who lives in a large house with a big back or front yard, then you will want to go for a model with a longer signal range as opposed to someone who lives in small apartment.

Portability

There are baby video monitors that can't easily be moved around. However, most parents tend to be on their feet most of the day and would probably appreciate a model that is portable. This means that the parent unit can be easily handheld, has a kick out stand so they can place it on a table top or even has a belt clip so they can attach it to a belt, waistband or pocket.

Features

What sort of features are parents looking for in their video baby monitors. Obviously they want to be able to see their baby clearly both day and night. Most monitors come with a LCD color screen, and automatic black and white night vision. The screen sizes vary, however. They range from a small screen, around 1.5〃 up to a large 7〃 which is great if not a bit excessive. Parents seem satisfied with a 3.5〃 screen and this is perfectly adequate, although I would say anything between 2.4〃 and 3.5〃 is good. There are video monitors that have a basic black and white day and night screen which some parents find perfectly adequate and is cheaper too. However, I do think that having a color screen is much nicer for day time viewing.

Depending on the model, other features that you'll find include talk-to-baby intercom, voice activation alert, temperature sensor, lullabies, camera pan, scan and zoom and nightlight. The more features a model has the pricier it can become.Apart from night vision, I think the most important features are: talk-to-baby intercom which means you can soothe your baby without having to go into the room; audio only mode so you can turn the video off (conserves energy) and you are alerted when your baby starts to whimper or cry. This is a great for parents at night as they can then see whether they need to get up; and expandability. It's always useful to choose a model that has the option of adding additional cameras. This allows the parent to have a camera in different rooms, great for an expanding family.

Buying a video baby monitor as a gift is not so simple as you can see as there are so many factors to take into account. So which one do you choose? In the end it really all depends on your budget, but it's worth buying the best one you can afford that will offer an interference free and secure reception and clear video and audio.

2) Baby toys including rattles, teething rings, hanging mobiles, musical toys, plush teddy bears, toy bars with bright colourful plastic items such as frogs and puppies for baby to swing at (helps eye-hand coordination), and swings to amuse baby.

3) Baby wipes, diapers, powders, creams, ointments, baby soap and shampoos are all well appreciated baby gifts that are also necessities for that newborn.

Baby shower is the time for gifting and games

Everyone who attends a baby shower for a friend, co-worker, or relative knows how much fun there can be for all. The mother to be is the queen for the day and is treated to not only many gifts (for her baby as well as some for herself) and some party favours as well. The typical baby shower includes memorable games such as:

- Name the Baby Items consists of writing down as many items related to babies (diapers, bottles, pacifiers, baby powder, etc.) as possible within a time period (usually 1 to 5 minutes). Who ever names the most items wins and gets a prize.

- Pin the Egg with the Sperm. Similar to Pin the Tail on the Donkey but with a maternity theme and using hand drawn egg and a squiggly looking "sperm". Contestants are blindfolded and whoever is closest conception of the "sperm" wins a prize.

- Stuff a diaper hamper with disposable diapers and have contestants guess how many it holds. The mom to be wins this one because she gets the prize of that hamper stuffed with diapers, something she'll never have enough of.

- Guess who's baby picture belongs to who. Ask attendees to bring along a baby photo of their own, number them, then put them up on a wall and ask people to guess which pic belongs to which attendee. No real prize here but still fun to see how the others looked as an infant.

- Guess mom's belly size and win a prize! Have each guesser measure out a piece of string and cut to the size they think her "girth" currently is. Then compare them to the actual belly of the mother to be. Who ever made the closest guess wins a prize.

Prizes for each of these games can be really cheap trinkets or maybe nicer choices, depending on the budget of the host. It's all for fun and celebration of the new baby.

Buying a Baby Stroller - Tips

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Modern baby strollers come in almost all shapes, designs and sizes and fit almost any class of people with a wide range of prices that can fit in almost everyone's budget.

Firstly before going to the nearby local shop or doing any online shopping you must look out for Consumer Reports and read their research on the different types of strollers that are available.

Consumer Reports are considered to be a professional, true, unbiased review of different types of consumer products. Their daily updates will allow you to discover both the benefits of a particular stroller brand, and any problems that people may have had with them.

Their mock tests are aimed at both safety concerns and comfort for the baby and their care takers using the baby stroller and include strap position, strength of the fastening belts, and how convenient the baby stroller is to handle as well as how portable it is.

Another important factor that you should consider is the weight of the baby stroller. It may seem weird to worry about about the weight of the stroller when you will be pushing it around on its wheels, but it does indeed make a huge difference in your choice. First and foremost is that the weight affects the portability of the baby stroller. The more bulky is the baby stroller, the tougher it is to move it which may in turn cause muscle pain and make you very tired at the end of the day. Heavy strollers may be too much of a burden for you to take out all the time and will just be left at home and a waste of money. Heavier strollers are also harder to maneuver, which is an important factor if you are going to be pushing it down busy pavements, or in shopping malls.

Finally, you will want to consider the price range you are willing to pay for your baby stroller. Some strollers are priced way too high, and others are great value for money. Consider carefully the features you actually need, and if you really want the extras then make sure it is something you are ready to pay for. If you can't afford a high price range of new baby strollers then you can try the option of finding a suitable stroller in the second hand shops. Repair shops can have repaired baby strollers which are in good condition and are very much affordable.

The arrival of a new baby brings in a lot of excitement but it is also a lot of hard work. Having a good quality stroller will make your life a whole lot easier.

If you are looking for a lightweight stroller then you should have a look at the Peg Perego Si. This excellent stroller can be folded with one hand, yet is sturdy and well balanced. The Peg Perego Uno is a great stroller than can turn into a pram to let your baby sleep.

Double Baby Strollers Buying Guide

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

How do you determine what the best double baby stroller is to buy? There's numerous things you should consider. In the course of three short years I found myself buying no less then 4 strollers. So I developed a bit of a system, because I wanted to make sure that I was spending my money wisely. I also wanted to be sure that I was getting exactly what I wanted and needed.

Why so many strollers?
The answer to this is because we had three kids in a short period of time and have a busy, active lifestyle. I didn't want that to change. I want to continue to jog, continue to bike the trails but also go the mall the grocery store unencumbered.

Buy For Your Lifestyle
A lot of people when they buy a stroller get concerned with the color or perhaps what they think makes their baby comfortable. While it's nice to be stylish it should not be your first concern. And don't worry about baby being comfortable. The only concern is that before they can sit up on their own, they need a flat recline or a bassinet.

You want to buy for your lifestyle, because the double baby strollers you use will determine how easily you can bring your kids along. Keep in mind that even if you have only one child you will be using your stroller for at least three years and maybe more. If you have 2 or 3 kids then your stroller choices will be with you for eight or ten years. And it flies by to be sure.

Key Considerations
A top consideration is always budget. Try to think long term here. I always say it's smarter to buy once and buy well then have to buy again and again because something has failed. This doesn't always mean buying the most expensive thing. In my experience, with a few exceptions, you should be buying a stroller that is at least somewhat future proofed.

Weight and Height
This means a stroller with a high weight limit, no less than 40 pounds and big size seats. Also, the seats should have seat belts that are height adjustable because it won't be long and those belts will be below his shoulders. In addition to this make sure the seats are a decent size minimum 12 inches and preferably more than about 16 inches.

Additional Features
There are some other things you should have on board to complete your stroller purchase. A cupholder for the adult is absolutely necessary. A snack tray and drink holder for the kids is also wise. Further to that I would also suggest that you get one that's removal.

Buying and researching double baby strollers can be made much easier by following my tips and tricks. You will buy better and smarter. Why not check out my blog right now for more reviews.

Buying Advice For The BumbleRide Indie Twin

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you are looking for a super double stroller, the BumbleRide Indie Twin is a unit that you must consider. This thing is just great. The BumbleRide lets you do everything that you need to do with two kids. This includes visits to the park or sitting and watching an older siblings soccer game. The BumbleRide is designed for the way you live.

Kids First
The great thing about this double stroller is that it puts your kids first. Now don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that you should actually put your own needs first, then consider your kids. They are pretty flexible for the most part. But it's also great when the stroller manufacturers remember to make your kids first class citizens with comfort and big canopies.

Big Flexible Seats
As an example consider the seats. First and foremost, they are large. This is important because that tends to make them more comfortable but also because it future proofs your investment. I don't know about you, but I like to buy the right thing once and only once. They are also very flexible. This is important because I have found that rarely are my two children either awake or asleep at the same time. When the infant goes off to sleep, she can lie back and relax, but the 2 year old can sit up straight if he wants and vice versa of course.

Stylish
Another very nice feature of the BumbleRide Indie twin is the ability to choose different colours. It might seem like a small thing for for a stroller of this caliber but it should be the case. It's generally available in green, black, blue, pink, red and a few other colors.

All Terrain Tires
This double stroller comes with 12 inch air filled tires. Yes, it does help make the ride more comfortable for your kids, but just as importantly it makes it easier to bump the Indie over rough terrain. This is important if you like the nature trails or even rough grass. I like to take my kids everywhere I go and this makes it easier. It also pushes through snow and slush much easier.

Sun Screens
The canopies that come with the BumbleRide Indie twin are not just ordinary canopies. First of all they are large and flexible, but as importantly they are actually spf rated. That means the have been tested for their ability to screen out harmful ultra violet rays.

Car Seats
I'm not a big believer in leaving kids in the car seats in the stroller. There actually been cases of asphyxiation from the child's head leaning over too far for too long. But there are times when baby is asleep and you want her to stay sleeping in the car seat. The Indie Twin can take several of the most popular car seats including the graco, chicco and peg perego models.

The BumbleRide Indie Twin is an awesome stroller. Check out more great features of the Bumbleride Indie Twin by clicking here.

Unique Baby Items Wholesale: Buying Without Compromising Quality

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Looking to buy unique baby items wholesale? Welcome to your comprehensive guide to finding an ideal retail partnership. With so many companies to choose from, how will you know the right fit?

Most moms know the trick to coaxing a child to eat a sandwich - cut the crust off. Connecting with your manufacturer should be better than peas and carrots; it should be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. No crust, please.

My Buddy and Me

A quality wholesale distributor does not have the intention of gaining the upper hand with their customers. They want to establish an equally beneficial partnership, resulting in more business and profit for all involved. If you are browsing websites, a great indication of this will be a solid mission statement that gives a brief description of their goals. Do they include how they are going to make this process easy for you? If you want to sell adorable and irresistible baby clothes, then it should be fun.

"You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do." - Henry Ford

A manufacturer with a positive reputation is more likely to stand behind their products, no matter what. Check for featured articles in publications, charitable contributions, undeniable reviews, and an emphasized customer service policy.

Get Creative

Sifting through darling little outfits and accessories is enough to make anyone say, "Awwww!" but are they unique? A host of baby products and gift items are available for retailers. Open a wholesale account that gives you access to the hottest new trends, and your customers will come crawling back for more. When they learn how to walk from that crawl, you are really in business.

Flutter with the Social Butterflies

Facebook and other social networking sites like Twitter, MySpace, and Blogger are the ideal place to post those charming baby photos. You know you cannot resist sharing the "Spaghetti Bowl Over the Head Incident"!

Your manufacturer should also use them to reach out and stay connected with you. Posting updates of new clothes as they come out keeps you in the loop, expands your inventory, and allows you to share the same information with your own customers with the click of your mouse. A computer savvy wholesale company opens the door for so many sales opportunities.

Buckle Up for Safety

Safety comes first with any product, especially infant and children's goods. The company you form a partnership with should have absolute confidence in what they are selling, and ease your worries about the merchandise you will be retailing. Verify that all products either meet or exceed United States Safety Standards.

Do You Trust Me? Circle yes or no.

Trustworthy businesses will not only have a privacy policy; you can double-dog dare them to prove it. If you want to place inventory orders online, make sure they are protected by an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to keep your financial information guarded. Also, no tattle tales. Selling or sharing retailer's contact information calls for a serious time-out.

To use this guide's basic tips, find unique baby items wholesale and baby clothes wholesale by teaming up with an excellent distributor.

Buying a Video Baby Monitor: A Helpful Guide

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There are so many video baby monitors on the market these days that when it comes to buying one, it can all be a little overwhelming. What type of monitor should you get, what features are essential, what price should you pay? These are all questions to think about.

To help you choose the right video baby monitor for you, I have put together a short guide of what features and functions to consider, so that you can confidently buy the right one.

Type of Transmission
Video baby monitors are basically a radio transmitter between the parent unit and the camera. Most video baby monitors these days have either analog or digital transmission and run on different frequencies, usually around 49MHz, 900MHz and 2.4GHz. Analog monitors (usually 900MHz) are cheaper to buy but are more open to interference and the range shorter, up to around 300 feet. Digital, on the other hand, offers a more secure and interference free reception, and a longer signal range, but tends to be pricier.

Something to think about before you buy a video baby monitor, is to look around at other electronic devices you have in your home such as cordless phones, microwave ovens,WiFi or blue tooth devices and try to choose a model that runs on a different frequency band. This is because having devices on the same frequency as your baby monitor can cause interference. Also note that signal reception depends on whether you live in a densely populated area or a more suburban or rural location. If you're close to neighbors who happen to have a video baby monitor or other wireless devices then this can interfere with your signal as well. If you're after a video baby monitor that is totally safe and secure, then you should consider buying one that has frequency hopping and data encryption technology.

Parent Unit
Most video baby monitor parent units come with a color LCD screen. Screen size varies from around a quite small 1.8" screen to a large 7" screen. It really all depends on how clearly you want to see your baby, but I think a 3.5" screen is perfectly adequate.

The Parent unit comes with easy to use buttons to allow you access to the features menu. If you really want the newest technology you can take a look at the Summer Infant Baby Touch video monitor which is the first monitor that has touch screen technology. Of course, being hi-tec means that it's a top of the range price.

Portability
Most video baby monitors are extremely portable and are designed to be handheld. Many come with a built-in kick out stand so you can place it on a flat surface or with a belt clip so you can attach it to your belt or waistband to be hands free. Some even look like cellphones that you can carry around in your hand or pocket or place in the charging station.

Night Vision
A great feature that most video baby monitors have is automatic black and white night vision capability. From low light to complete darkness, the in-built infrared LED lights on the camera allow you to see your baby up to a certain range. Some monitors allow you to see up to 10ft, but others more than 20ft from camera to crib.

Two-Way Talk Back
Having two-way communication is a really neat feature that parents really love. The two-way audio between the parent unit and camera in your child's room allows you to talk to your little one without you even being there and you can hear them gurgle back to you.

Expandability
When you buy a video baby monitors most come with one camera, but with some models you can buy two, offering a saving. Many models can support up to four cameras, allowing multiple use throughout your house. Picking a monitor that allows expandability is helpful if you think you will need to cover more areas of your house, e.g. if you have or are planning more than one child or have or are having twins.

Motion and Sound Sensors
Another cool feature is motion or sound alert sensors. Most cameras have very sensitive built-in microphones so when your baby starts making noises you will be immediately alerted. This is great at night when your video monitor is turned off and only turns on if voice activated.

Sound Lights
This feature is commonly found in video baby monitors. When your baby makes a sound the parent unit sound lights will turn on. The louder the baby's sound is the brighter or more lights will come on, depending on the model. This is particularly useful if you are in a noisy room and can't hear the audio.

Temperature sensor
Some models offer a temperature sensor that can monitor the temperature in your baby's room. Ideally, the temperature should be between 68 to 72 degrees F. Again this is a useful feature, but be aware that some customers have complained the temperature is not accurate on some models.

Volume control
Most models come with the ability to control the volume. With some models you have to scroll through the menu to access the volume control which can be a bit of a chore, whilst others have volume control on the side of the monitor which is easier.

Lullabies
Some video baby monitors come with preloaded lullabies. Some parents really love this feature whilst others reported that the sound quality was tinny and annoying. I would probably not recommended buying a model specifically for the lullabies as you may be disappointed, but if it happens to have this feature then well and good.

In the end, the most important consideration is to buy a model that offers good picture and audio quality, is interference free and secure. Of course it's always nice to have an all singing and dancing model, but the more features you have, the more expensive the unit. I hope this has been a helpful guide.

I have written other articles about buying video baby monitors. Take a look at the buying advice section on my video baby monitor reviews website. Also check out my in-depth reviews on some of the top selling video baby monitors.

Choosing the Correct Car Seat

Choosing the correct car seat can often be very confusing as not only have you to ensure the correct size car seat for your child but that the car seat that you choose is also a correct fit for your car. Selecting a car seat that scores highly in the many test reports available is all very well but selecting a car seat that fits your car properly is probably the more important feature for your childs safety.

If you are in any doubt about which car seat is the correct fit for your car consult the car seat manufacturers web site as many of the leading manufacturers such as Britax, Maxicosi and Renoluxwill have a Fit Finder guide detailing which of their car seats are most suitable for your model of car.

All child restraints sold in the UK must conform to the United Nations ECE Regulation R44.03 or later version of the standard and must be clearly marked.

Choosing a car seat that is suitable for your childs weight and height.
Group 0+ Infant Carriers

Group 0: for babies upto 10 kgs (22 lbs) approximately from birth to 6-9 months.

Group 0+: for babies upto 13 kg (29lbs) approximately from birth to 12-15 months.

Group 0+ Infant Carriers

This group of car seat can be used in the front or rear of the car but CANNOT be used in the front passenger seat if there is a passenger airbag. It is safer to put them in the rear. Rearward-facing seats provide greater protection for the baby's head, neck and spine than forward-facing seats.

Babies should be in a rearward facing car seat and should not be placed in a forward-facing seat until they weigh at least 9 kgs and can sit up unaided. Babies should be kept in a rearward-facing seat for as long as possible. Once your child is above the maximum weight for a rearward-facing seat or the top of their head is above the top of the seat they should be moved into a forward-facing seat. It is not important if their knees are bent in the seat, provided they are still within the seat's weight range.

Convenience factor with this stage of car seat is that most models will have a carry handle enabling you to easily remove and carry the baby without removing them from the car seat especially handy if the baby is asleep and may also fit onto corresponding pushchair converting it to a travel system.

Group 0+ and 1 Car Seats

Suitable for Babies upto 18kg, Birth to 4 years approximately.

Ideal car seats if you do not have to constantly remove them from car to car or car to home. They are a much larger seat designed to protect your baby from newborn to 4 years approximately. The car seat is used rearward facing when using for a baby up to 9kgs. The car seat can be used forward facing once the baby has reached 9 to 13kg weight. Baby does not have to be forward facing until they are 13 kgs. It is important to check that this style of child car seat is compatible with your vehicle when fitted forward AND rearward facing. You must never leave baby asleep unattended in any car.

Forward-facing child seat

Group 1: for children weighing 9-18 kgs (20-40 lbs) approximately from 9 months - 4 years.

Once a child has outgrown a rearwards facing seat, the best option is to use a Group 1 seat with an integral harness, the large area of the harness helps to reduce the risk of injury if there is a crash. The bottom attachment between the legs will also prevent the child from sliding under, and out of the harness. They can be used in the front or rear of the car but it is safer to put them in the rear especially if there is a passenger airbag in the front. Once again it is safest to keep children in this type of car seat until they have outgrown it.

Only move your child to a booster seat once they have exceeded the maximum weight for the child seat or the top of their head is higher than the top of the seat. If you intend to use this car seat between two cars please ensure that the model of car seat purchased is suitable for both cars. It maybe simpler to purchase two seats each one fitting the car perfectly rather than buying one seat which may not fit either car perfectly as great care is needed to follow the seat belt routings and tighten well. They can also be car specific for correct fitting and not every child seat fits every car.

With this in mind it maybe worth checking out ISOFIX fitting car seats. This is a system that is intended to make fitting child seats quick and simple. All new cars are manufactured with ISOFIX points built into them allowing ISOFIX child seats to be simply plugged into the ISOFIX points in the car. This is a very useful development as many people find it difficult to fit child seats correctly and many surveys have found that a high proportion of the child seats are not fitted securely enough. Most child seats are currently designed to be fitted by using a car's adult lap and diagonal seat belt (or sometimes, just a lap belt). However car seats, seat belts and their anchorages vary dramatically between different models of cars. Car seats have different shapes, some seat belts are much shorter than others, the position of the anchor points differs so some are further forward or have shorter stalks than others. All these factors make it virtually impossible to make a child car seat that fits all cars and sometimes tricky to fit a child car seat correctly.

ISOFIX car seats are designed to solve all these problems. The ultimate aim is that any ISOFIX child car seat you buy will fit your car simply by plugging it into the ISOFIX points. The other benefit of ISOFIX is that it will create a rigid link between the child seat and the car to provide extra solidity. It is important to make sure that any ISOFIX seats that you use in the vehicle are approved for it. It is not yet the case that any ISOFIX seat will fit in every car with ISOFIX points. To fit an ISOFIX seat into some cars you may either to use a top tether kit or an ISOFIX car seat that has a drop down leg to stabilise the car seat to the car floor. Please ensure your car is suitable for whichever seat you choose by consulting the relevant manufacturers web site.

Group 2 Child Car Seats: for children weighing 15-25kgs (33-55lbs) from 4 to 10 years approximately.

If your child is over the 25kgs weight but is below 135cm in height it is recommended that the child remain in the seat. The majority of Stage 2 seats have a height adjustable back to allow you to gradually change the height of the back as your child grows; this also changes the height and angle of the seat belt, keeping it constantly in the optimum safest position. These seats do not have to be fitted to each car and will generally fit all vehicles without too many problems - sports car owners with bucket seats will need to choose a seat with a small base.

Group 1 & 2 Child Car Seats:

Suitable for children weighing 9-36kgs (20-80lbs) from 9 months to 12 years approximately or up to 135cms.

There is now a greater choice of car seats in this range than ever before. The car seat will include a child harness to be used up to 15-18kgs then the harness can be removed and the child seat can then use the adult car seat belt with most of these seats having an adjuster or seat belt guide so that the belt does not rub on the childs neck. The back rest of these seats will be height adjustable with some even having width adjustment as well.

Group 3 Child Car Seats:

Usually Suitable for children of 22kgs (48lbs) or 6 years upwards.

This child seat raises the height of the child so they can use the adult seat belt in the correct position.

WARNING:

No child seat is escape proof as harness systems are not designed to be completely child proof in order to comply with the legal requirements of ECE R44. The harness must be fastened and adjusted correctly with children encouraged to sit within the car seats harness.

If child seat has been involved in an accident or sustained any damage whatsoever it must be replaced immediately. Any damage to the car seat is not always visible such as the harness which is designed to stretch helping to prevent damage to the childs internal organs. This can only happen once with any further impact leaving the harness with no more stretch thus risking injury to the child.

This is why you should never use a second hand car seat.

If you allow your child to eat and drink in the car seat please ensure that you keep the buckle of the childs car seat clean as any food or drink that finds its way in may prevent the buckle and harness from working properly.
