Baby Carriers - Become an Expert at Buying the Right Premium Brand Baby Carrier

There are so many baby carrier brands out there making all kinds of claims. We often accept the features they have without asking the fundamental question; what is important to me? I advise my clients to take a step back, assess their situation and do some research. Choosing the right baby carrier is one of the most important purchasing decisions we can make for our children. This article will help you to confidently identify premium quality carriers and ask retailers the right questions.

Quality

The quality of a carrier can range from the care put into making the carrier to the means of producing it. Here are the main quality considerations:

You may be carrying your child for a significant part of their early childhood so ensure you are satisfied that the fabric is hardwearing.

The carrier may be in contact with you and your child's skin for long periods, so natural breathable materials are a high priority.!00% cotton, canvas and linen are often used in premium carriers where the material is in contact with the skin.

Look for Non-metallic vegetable dyes as these are kinder to the skin.

The OeKo-Tex standards include a test for material worn next to the skin. If the carrier achieved a good or very good in the children's skin category, the result will always be prominently displayed. If it is not, ask your retailer about it.

Is the baby carrier built to last? Premium baby carriers are not cheap and you may be using it for some time.

Are the buckles and clasps sturdy? The best carriers use military grade plastics in this safety critical part of their construction.

Are the seams double stitched with extra anchor stitching at the load bearing points?

Check for your local safety standard marks

If ethical buying is important to you, check out the manufacturer's website, most responsible makers will have environmental and human rights impact statements along with information on the means of production.

Design

The design of the carrier will tell you a lot about the care put into making it. Importantly, it may reveal if the brand has kept up with innovations, or is using an old design. Some baby carriers are more suited to certain body shapes and of course you may want it to fit a number of wearers and children. Here are some ideas on what to look for in the information, adverts and pictures and what to ask your retailer:

Make sure the carrier is suitable for the age of your child; the age range should be displayed prominently in the advert or literature.

Check that the child is seated in the correct position; research has shown that children seated in an 'M' position, with their bottom and legs supported knee-pit to knee-pit, are getting the optimum support for their developing pelvis, hip and back joints.

With most carriers there is a learning curve in terms of their usage. However, putting the carrier on should feel intuitive.

How many positions can you use with carrier? Having the versatility of three positions, such as: front (facing in), back, and hip carry can be a god-send as the child grows and your needs change.

Studies have found that new-born babies being carried in the facing out position can develop anxiety. I advise parents to avoid carriers that only offer the facing out position.

Be wary of buckles and straps that are hard to reach and buckles that are too stiff and fiddly.

Premium carriers have extra wide padded shoulder straps and a wide stiff padded waist belt for comfort and support,

Most premium brands will offer an organic option.

The very best carriers have plenty of adjustability to suit you, your baby, and your carrying partner's needs. Make sure that each supporting strap or belt can be fully adjusted

Premium brand carriers often differentiate themselves with additional features such as hoods, foot straps, storage bags and neck rests. Ask your retailer what else it comes with.

After-sales support

Baby carriers can be difficult to get used to at first. Many manufacturers and retailers of premium brands offer practical advice.

Does the carrier come with a fully illustrated booklet or DVD with carrying instructions?

Are there on-line videos showing how to use the carrier?

Is there a help line or email address you can use to gain additional information, advice and guidance?

Try Before You Buy

Even with a comprehensive checklist like the one above, there is no substitute for trying before you buy. The problem is retailers often only stock a narrow selection of carrier and, anyway, you can only try them on in the shop. There is little opportunity to find out in the real world whether you and your little one will take to it.

Some retailers offer baby carrier hire services for anything from 2 weeks to several months hire. Some will even use the cost of the hire to offset the price of a new carrier. This can be an effective way of ensuring you get the right carrier.

Join your local sling-meet group, although these groups are usually for people with stretchy and woven wraps, they often have sling libraries that include soft structured baby carriers.

Contact your local sling consultant. They host carrier parties for groups and undertake personal one to one consultations. Your sling consultant should have a wide range of carriers and should be able to demonstrate the carriers with you and your child and offer tailored advice.

By thinking about your needs, researching and asking the right questions you should avoid expensive mistakes and ensure you find the right premium baby carrier for you.

Stretchy Wrap and Woven Sling Baby Carrier Tips

How do I get a stretchy Moby wrap to fit properly?

When tying your wrap ensure that you tie it tight and high against your body. The weight of your baby will create the space for it to fit in.

I have back pain, can I still carry my baby?

Always consult your doctor if you have physiological conditions. If your doctor advises that it is OK to wear your baby, you could ease back problems by stretching out the fabric as much as possible across your back. This will distribute the weight over your whole back and make it as comfortable as possible.

When wearing my woven wrap, I want to provide additional support for my baby's head and neck.

Pull the middle band of fabric up over the head of your baby, then roll it down to the baby's neck with either a flannel or a muslin tucked in. This will give some support for their neck.

Putting my sling on and taking it off all the time is becoming a drag.

Keep your wrap on for the day, like an extra piece of clothing. That way you can pop baby in and out as needed without having to put it on each time. When tying the knot in your wrap put the knot to one side so that you have access to your trousers, too!

What is the maximum time limit my baby can be in the carrier?

There is no time limit for how long your baby can be in the baby carrier. As long as you are both happy, keep them in it! If your baby starts to get restless in the carrier, walk around. They love being close to you for your warmth, smell, listening to your heartbeat and feeling your movement. So have a wander around and see how they like it then!

Are there any carrying positions I should avoid?

It is not recommended that you have your baby facing out front in any carrier. It does not create the best seating position for them. There is no support for their head it they fall asleep and they can get bombarded with what is coming at them from the world, with nowhere to shelter! An alternative to this is the hip carry. To do this you put the wrap on the same way as you have done for other holds. But you then move it across to the side, where you want your baby to be seated. Sit them in the fabric so that their bottom is supported, then stretch it out so that both pieces go from knee pit to knee pit. You can then bring the front panel up for extra support.

A Newborn Baby Carrier Should Provide Safety, Security, and Snuggles

You have a new bundle of joy in your life -- and now you're ready to get out and explore the world with your new baby. Or at least take a walk around the block. A newborn baby carrier is a great solution for new parents because you can go out for a walk, take a shopping trip, or even just get some housework done while your baby is with you. A good baby carrier provides your baby with safety, security, and lots of opportunity to snuggle with you.

When you're shopping for the perfect carrier be sure you consider safety carefully. There are many "baby packs" on the market and not all of them are a good idea. Avoid any baby carrier that leaves your newborn's legs dangling down. Many of the popular models found in stores have this design. The problem with dangling legs is the unnatural pressure it puts on your baby's developing legs and hips. This can spell big problems for your baby now and down the road as he or she begins walking.

Instead shop for a newborn baby carrier that holds your little one in a gently cradled position, or one that lets you cross your baby's legs under his or her bottom. When your child is a few months he or she won't care for the crossed leg position, but at first babies don't mind this. When this position is outgrow a carrier should support your baby's bottom and thighs - your little one will literally be sitting on her bottom in the carrier, not dangling by her crotch area. Baby slings, baby wraps, and some "pack" carriers like the Ergobaby carrier line properly support your baby. For a newborn baby carrier I recommend you choose a wrap. It will adapt with your baby's age and preferences.

Be sure you keep fabric out of your baby's face when riding in any carrier.

Your child also needs to feel secure while riding on you. Many people wear their babies facing out, thinking babies like to see the world. But this is often unsettling to infants, especially newborns. Face your little one in, so that you are chest to chest. This keeps baby happy and secure while riding with you. As your baby grows you can pick a carrier that allows your baby to ride on your back. This gives baby the chance to look around at everything that's going on while still being pulled in close to your body and feeling secure.

Your newborn wants to be snuggled close. This is another reason why a wrap carrier is ideal. Your baby sits right against your body, cuddled within a soft carrier. Babies really like being balled up in there! If your baby protests when you first put him in the carrier don't give up. Instead, take a walk! Many little ones grumble initially and then settle down as soon as they feel the rhythm of a brisk walk. It reminds them of being snuggled in the womb. Again, remember to keep your baby's face clear so he can breathe. While your child is on you it's second nature to check on him, but just as a reminder you should frequently peek in at your baby to be assured that he's not too hot or too cold, and hasn't slipped too far into the fabric.

With a little shopping you can find the perfect newborn baby carrier. Choose one that supports your baby's bone development, helps your baby feel secure, and keeps your newborn snuggled closely to your protective body. It will quickly become your baby's favorite place to be!

By the way, do you want to get more practical baby care information that will give you keys to a smarter, happier baby while building a strong bond with your little one?

Parents use baby carriers mostly for practicality as it is cheaper than a buggy, quick and convenient to use and allows the parent to have hands free to do other things. However, research has show that it can also encourage a special closeness between mum and baby as it establishes close eye contact.

They, like the Baby Bjorn active carrier for example, hold the child in a comfortable position against the parent whilst providing secure support for the child's spine and hips at the same time. This position makes it easy for mum and dad to keep close contact with the baby.

The Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital published groundbreaking studies in 1970 which showed the importance of eye contact between a child and parent and the emotional closeness this establishes. As a result, parents were encouraged to carry their baby more often increasing the amount of physical contact. Fathers were also encouraged to increase their contact with baby both during the delivery of the baby and in their early months. It is now widely accepted that this closeness, especially in the first six months is very important.

Dr Avroy A Fanaroff, Senior Physician and Spokesman for the Paediatric Department Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital says, "Ever since the 1970s, study after study has shown the importance of early eye-to-eye contact, of close bodily contact between parents and their new-born babies or infants. This kind of contact enables both parents to develop a close intimacy with the young baby that is beneficial for the child's development and the family's bonding."

Baby Bjorn are expert makers of and firmly support this view and encourage parents to carry the child closely as they believe it is soothing for the parent and child alike, as they understand the parent's movement can help calm an anxious child. They also specialises in offering parents a comprehensive range of baby baths to meet the needs of parents and their baby bathing requirements.

Their baby carriers are designed to be carried on the stomach which means that the infant is turned towards mum or dad during the first few months, and hence retains the physical closeness with the parent. Eye contact and the parent's bodily warmth helps the child adapt to life outside the womb.

The Babybjorn Baby Carrier Active is a popular baby carrier as it has a sturdy design which allows the parent to carry heavier children for longer. The comfortable lumbar support and the wide, padded shoulder straps provides an even weight distribution, allowing parental comfort as well as comfort for baby. The baby carrier provides excellent support for the child's back and head, making sure their legs and arms are in a physiologically correct position at all times.

Online baby shop offers parents a wide range of baby carriers and baby carrier accessories to be purchased, along with some great advice for new mums and dads.

There is not one person who would throw money away, right? Well, think again because when someone decides to make a purchase without properly researching the item to ensure that the product fits their budget and/or needs is essentially throwing money away. Now, you can rely on the recommendation of the customer service associate at your local children's store, but with a little more research you can make sure that you select the best baby carrier at the best possible price and I am certain that you will agree that our babies are well worth a little more effort.

Some frequently asked questions new or expecting parents have are: I have had chronic back problems, which carrier will put the least amount of stress on my back? As my child grows, is there a baby carrier that will accommodate this? Will my hands be free while carrying my child in the carrier? What if my baby falls asleep in the carrier? Will I be able to put him/her down without disturbance? What if my child does not like to face outwards or inwards all the time? Are there carriers with a multiple positioning feature? I've heard that some baby carriers become way too hot and sweltering during the summer months. Is there a particular model that has been designed with a breathable material to prevent this and allow for cooler carrying? Where can I find the best price for a carrier?

When my children were small, I also asked some of these questions and I had a difficult time finding the answers. I realized that there was a demand for this information. So, I developed a review website specifically geared toward answering these questions that many parents are asking. I've spent countless hours gathering as many reviews as possible. It was tedious and laborious however, I researched all of the reviews and compiled the information into unbiased reviews, full of content of actual buyers and users of these products. Additionally, I was able to find where to find these products for the lowest price. How I wish this information were available when I was searching for the best baby carrier.

I am a proud parent of three beautiful children and as parents the single most important thing we can do for our babies is to protect them at all costs, whatever the expense. The worst nightmare for every parent is something terrible happening to our children. So, if baby carriers enable parents to keep their babies close, provide comfort and security, as well as the piece of mind a parent receives knowing that their baby is safely in their arms then the expense associated with a baby carrier is money well spent. Some people might read this article and think that I am being a little obsessive, but I would much rather be considered a little obsessive than neglectful. So, if you are searching for the best baby carrier that fits yours needs and budget? Please feel free and take the time to visit my website, you'll be glad you did. Thank you.

The Best Baby Carrier Or Soft Structured Carrier - What Features Are Priority?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Choosing the BEST baby carrier for you and your baby can be a daunting task. With so many to choose from, and so many features to pick from, it's hard to know what is and is not a priority. Well, let me break it down for you.

SAFETY is the number one concern, and the best baby carriers are made from high quality materials such as 100% cotton, 100% polyester, or a mix of lycra and mesh. Strong fabrics ensure that there will be no rips or tears in the material. Verify that the buckles are durable and well made. Some soft structured carriers offer safety buckles that prevent accidental opening, which are great, but they can also be a pain when it takes two hands to open it instead of one. Also, the best baby carriers offer several different carrying positions, such as front, back, and hip carry. Make sure each position provides an ergonomically correct sitting position verses a hanging crotch position, which can actually cause damage to a developing spine if positioned for long periods of time. Proper head support is also an important feature, especially if you intend to use it for a newborn.

COMFORT for both you and the Baby is the second concern. The best baby carriers offers wide, padded shoulder straps, and a wide padded waist belt. The waist belt should offer lumbar support and serve as a balancer for distributing most of the weight to your hips verses your shoulders and neck. Also look for a sternum strap, these help maximize the weight distribution and provide better security. Make sure all of the straps are fully adjustable too. Some baby carriers offer shoulder and waist belt extensions, however, if you can find one with plenty of room for adjustment already built in, than you won't have to spend the extra money later on down the road. The best baby carriers are easy to adjust as well, offering an easy transfer from one person to another without a whole lot of fuss. As far as Baby is concerned, aside from an ergonomically correct sitting position, make sure that the leg wholes are wide enough that they won't rub uncomfortably on chubby little thighs. The soft structured carrier should also have plenty of room to grow, whether an infant insert is included, or it offers a width alternating base.

Check the WEIGHT LIMITS. The best baby carriers are rated to carry up to 40 or 45 pounds, however, there are a few that are only rated for 26 pounds, so make sure you check the maximum weight capacity if you plan on using it for an extended period of time. Also, some soft structured carriers are only rated to carry a minimum of 15 pounds, but also offer the option of purchasing an infant insert sold separately that goes from 7 to 15 pounds.

POSITIONS are very important when searching for the best baby carrier. Some only offer two, front facing in or out, while others offer up to 5 positions, front facing in and out, back, hip, and cradle. Knowing which positions are most important to you before you buy can help a great deal. For instance, my daughter loves the front facing out carry position, and there are several soft structured baby carriers that don't offer it, therefore that would have been one of my main priorities.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES that may or may not interest you are, sleeping hoods, and storage pockets. Many soft structured carriers offer removable sleeping hoods, or hoods that are attached and store in a pocket when not in use. Some also offer storage pockets for carrying keys, wallet, cell phone, etc.

CHECK FOR RECALLS. Lastly, check to make sure that the soft structured carrier you're interested in has not been recalled for any reason. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers a list of "Infant/Child Product Recalls". I would suggest reading through this list to verify that the baby carrier you have in mind is not included.

Which Is the Best Type of Carrier for Me?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

One of the most common questions asked regarding baby carriers is "which type is best for me and my child?" Simply it is a personal choice but you want to choose one that is both comfortable to wear and one your baby/child is happy in. Another important thing to consider is the safety of the baby carrier that you're going to buy. Also it is good to consider whether it is good for your back and comfortable to use when your baby is in it. So there are really lots of factor that you should think of before buying baby carrier that suits you and your baby. Below are the types of baby carriers that will help you decide on which type you're going in for.

The Sling

Slings are typically worn on one shoulder and are most suitable for new born allowing them to be carried in a reclining cradle like position, however these can also be used with toddlers carrying them in a hip position. As they are a one shoulder design some people find them uncomfortable to wear over a long time.

The Ring Sling

The ring sling is very popular due to its elegant design and the adjustability of the ring, some people like the look of the hanging sash aspect of this carrier although the sash can be tucked in if required this carrier is great for carrying newborns as the abundance of fabric can assist in breast feeding giving the wearer a certain amount of privacy, and newborns can be carried both upright and reclining.

The Wrap

The Wrap is one of the most popular carriers very versatile and some say the best for the baby. There are studies that say the ergonomic design is both best for the baby's spine and the well being of the wearer wraps are better for small babies due to their design but can be used with toddlers to the stretch wrap is not ideal for carrying baby's on the back but then most carriers would want baby at the front, however the woven wrap is ideal for carrying both front and back and also from the hip.

The Mei tai/Asian carrier

Theses carriers are a good all rounder and is a favourite carrier for all ages. The support is excellent both supporting from both shoulders and the hips. These are ideal for carrying from the from back and from the hip highly decorative and a good all round carrier ideal for newborns to about 3 depending on size. They also have the advantage of being reversible.

The Structure Carrier

Some people of a larger build find theses types of carrier more useful. They are comparable with the Mei-tai for comfort and are not recommended for babies unable to support their own head the weight of the child and carrier is easily supported on the hips not usually as pretty as the others but then that probably why they appear to be popular with dads theses carries can be worn front and back.
